About the piece
As women in the United States are continuously losing rights and bodily autonomy, the need to rise up and voice our anger becomes increasingly more important. This new work will be a way for musicians to use their art for protest and a way to speak out against the fascist government.
Free will be written for flute, bass clarinet (low C extension not required), and fixed audio & visual media. You can perform this piece without the visual element if needed. Contemporary techniques in this piece will include: Slap tongue and multi-phonics/spectral multi-phonics.
The fixed media will include activating topics including; bodily autonomy, names and stories of the women & people with uteruses who have been effected by the over turn of Roe Vs Wade, and other topics that might be upsetting. Please reach out to Sarah if you have any concerns or questions about the fixed media. Dr. Koteeswaran and Sarah Lucas-Page will be premiering the new work at University of North Carolin at Greensboro in October and then performing it at the Flute New Music Consortium October 23-25 at Oklahoma City University as Eros Duo.

Starting December 1, 2026
- For students: A one on one online meeting with the composer and Dr. Koteeswaran to talk over the piece, techniques, and other questions you might have.
Professionals also have this option to meet with the composer if they would like to schedule a meeting.
Timeline
You can join the consortium August 13th through November 30th, 2026.
The premiere will be at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and then also performed at the Flute New Music Consortium at Oklahoma City University.
Music will be delivered December 1st, 2026 via email. If you requested hard copies, they will be mailed via USPS on December 1st.
